The JJ Electronic EL84 is a solidly built EL84 / 6BQ5 with excellent tonal qualities. JJ’s rugged construction of this tube offers high reliability without any compromise to the sound. This tube has solid lows with warm bright mids and shimmery highs. When saturated the harmonics are rich and dynamic. The JJ EL84 nails the classic sound of this tube. A blue glow on the surface of the glass, mica, or metal is fine. A blue or violet cloud within the tube structure is bad. An orange glow from the filament or cathode in the middle of the tube is normal and can vary from very bright to very dim depending on how it is covered from view by the surrounding structures. A red or orange glow on the surface of the plate is bad and is referred to as "red-plating." This is caused by setting the bias of the tube too hot. If the tube was bad you would hear it.

If you want to use EL84's with your amp you will need to purchase the "YJS" or "YJShort" Yellow Jackets. These are pin converters that allow you to safely use EL84's in your amp.

Towards the end of the checkout process there will be a notes section where you will want to state, "please match as middle numbers." This range is compatible with all Mesa amps.

The Epiphone valve Jr calls for one EL84 and one 12AX7. In fact, we carry a tube set for your amp. Do a search for SET-EPIPHONE-002.

The Blues Junior comes stock with a pair of EL84's and these would be an excellent choice for your amp.

These are not burned in. Unfortunately, we do not offer a burned in version of these tubes at this time.

Yes, the 6BQ5 is the American name for these tubes. As they were commonly used in European amps, the European name EL84 has become the more commonly used term.

Good tube at a fair price, and the Apex matching can be a real plus. Work well in guitar amps, more reliable than most and response seems balanced.

jjaimes3 - May 29th, 2014

I discovered JJ tubes about a year ago after obtaining some new amps and starting a business of repairing them. I find these to be great sounding and recommend them to customers as a low cost option to re tubing with NOS or other more expensive brands. I can attest by doing several sounds tests that JJs, especially these EL84s, sound great, provide a wide range of tone, and do well at bringing dead amps back to life. I've tried GTs, EHs, and Sovteks as singles and in matched kits and I can say that JJs usually out perform the other kinds hands down. Great product!

A great EL84 tube and less than half the price of some of the Russian and Chinese EL84-like tubes. Based on my experience with different amps from Scott and VOX to new Fenders this is the only authentic performing EL84 being made. The Russian "EL84" tubes are all based on an old Russian millitary type which is similar to an EL84 but not quite the same thing and its noticeable. The Chinese versions all seem to be copies of the Russian Types. I cant recommend this tube highly enough if you cant afford the exorbitant high price of NOS tubes. These are made just like an old Amperex or Valvo anyway.

I replaced all the tubes in my Mesa Boogie Duel Rectifier with these tubes and they sound terrific. Still have that Mesa clean sound and can easily kick into dirty biting Mesa distortion it is famous for. Not bad, given I paid less than half of the price of fancy tubes.
