Vacuum Tube - 12AX7LPS, Sovtek
9 pin miniature preamp tube (Amplification Factor = 100). This Russian tube is full bodied and well balanced. It has a high gain with a very smooth presentation. Great price for a great tube!!
The only tube I buy for the PI position. There are reviews out there claiming that these, current production Mullard, and the Gold Lion B759 are all the same tube. I own at least one of all three, and I can tell you that they are not. They do share the same basic bottle size and plate structure, but the similarities end there. The Gold Lion, albeit overpriced, is as good as advertised. In my Rockerverb and SLO, I couldn’t find a spot where I liked it. In my Vox, I couldn’t find a spot where I didn’t like it. The LPS is by far the best bang for the buck. You typically find them for less money than the Mullard reissue, and in my experience, they sound better and are less noisy. The Sovtek LPS is one of the best current production 12AX7’s available, regardless of price.
There are brilliant in hybrid amplifiers, and made all the difference in my Micro Dark and Vox VT40+
The VT40+ came with a Ruby 12ax7 which was rather good, but I decided to switch it out for another to see if I could tell a difference, I tried JJ's Chinese, Tung Sol. The Tung Sol was on par with the Ruby, The JJ and Chinese sounded thinner, and more distorted they changed the sound and dynamics of the amp, it didn't sound like a Vox tone anymore, though it's a hybrid amp, it lost the thick, warm tube like sag it had, I could feel that difference when I plucked the strings, the loss made the amp sound more solid state, without depth.
Great sounding tubes. Swapped out the preamp tubes on my Vox AXC30 (yes, with the blueback speakers) ;) Thanks y'all.
The perfect current production tube for the phase inverter slot in my Peavey Classic 30 amp. It came highly recommended by trusted sources and did not disappoint. I'm on my third Sovtek 12AX7LPS as I change out the PI tube whenever I change the power tubes. Great tube at a great price.
A+ ! Great Tubes ! I am using these in the V3 PI stage in both my Marshall Plexi Cloan Amps (Metro Builds) These tubes work great, Where others didn't. I will be buying these again just to have on hand.
Currently using this as PI in both my Peavey Classic 50s and I'm very happy with it there. Full bodied lush tone, can really drive the output section well. Also have used it with some success in V2 (lead) position where it's quite good, but a little doesn't have enough "hair" for that position.
