Speakers. The last opportunity to modify your tone. Unlike hi-fi speakers which attempt to create sounds that are true to the musical source fed them, guitar speakers impart their own tone.
Your amp/cabinet pretty much determines three things about what speaker to select; speaker size, impedance and power rating. (See our tech corner article on Speaker Impedance, Power Handling and Wiring). But the tone is up to you! Speaker replacement is probably the easiest mod you can perform.

Jensen Loudspeakers have a long history. Founded in 1927 by Peter Jensen, one of the co-inventors of the loudspeaker, Jensen began producing commercial amplifier loudspeakers in the 1940s.
The Falcon 8" speaker produces the same warm and expressive sound and its 10” and 12” counterparts. It offers a smooth and dynamic response that is ideal for both clean and pushed tones. Adopted primarily in the Vibrolux® and Vibroverb® amps of the Brownface and Blackface era, the C10Q is a very easy to drive speaker that breaks up nicely with straightforward biting character. The P10R is very important in the history of Jensen speakers. Its shimmering, yet throaty and vibrant tone is one of the signatures of the Tweed era and inspired the start-up of the British tones. It was the first speaker reissued by Jensen, presented to a restricted panel of partners at the 1999 Summer NAMM show. The P10R is the speaker that contributed to the magical tone of the 4x10 Bassman® Tweed amps, the 4x10 Super Tweed Amps and the equally mythical 3x10 Bandmaster® amps.

The C12N is one of the most important speakers in Jensen’s history. It is the top 12” speaker of the ‘Blackface Era, used by many American manufacturers in the mid ‘60s for their upper range models when the price of AlNiCo became unsustainable for the manufacturers. Clear highs, solid mids, and powerful basses, it epitomizes the tone of that decade, from the surf, the rock n’ roll, the electric blues and the West Coast inspired music. It was used in Twin, Bassmanä and Bandmasterä style amps, and many others.

The AlNiCo P12N is surely one of the most iconic Jensen speakers of the late ‘50s. Visually impressive because of the big bell cover on the magnet, it is the highest powered 12” speaker in the range. Among others, the P12N was used in the high-end amps of the time such as the Fender® Tweed Twin. Crystal clear in the treble range with transparent mids and powerful but tight bass, it is the “King of Clean Tones”.

Typically used in the lower powered 12” amps for studio or practice, the C12R is a clear sounding, sparkling speaker, very sensitive to the character of amplifier. The smallest powered AlNiCo 12” in the range, the P12R is the classic choice for the lower powered combo amps of the tweed era. It was very common in Fender®, Epiphone® and Ampeg® amps until the early ‘60s. The P12R is bright and colorful, has excellent cut and sparkle, and breaks up easily.

The C8R is the little gem in the Jensen Vintage series. It delivers a solid compact tone that defies its size. Extremely versatile, it finds application in small home and student amplifiers; but with a microphone in front, it is capable of transferring on tape some of the biggest tones ever. Not by chance, the vintage Fender® Champ® amplifiers produced with the C8R speaker are treasured by many players as a great studio tool.

The Falcon 12 is a mid-power, rich and fat sounding speaker. Very smooth in the top end, rounded in the midrange, it delivers exceptional bass depth and power for its power rating. The secret lies in its proprietary, green cone membrane, the only seamed cone in the Jet Series which is an integral element of the pronounced bass response. The Falcon is very suitable to low/medium output power stages with its ability of making even small amplifiers sound bigger.

Not a strict reissue, the P10R-F was born as a special edition of the P10R, developed in cooperation with Fender®, for the Custom Shop ’57 BandMasterä and the 20th Anniversary Vibro-Kingä amps. The high power 10” Alnico in the Vintage Series, the P10Q was used in a handful of beautifully sounding amps such as the Tweed Super, Brownface Super, and others.
