Speakers. The last opportunity to modify your tone. Unlike hi-fi speakers which attempt to create sounds that are true to the musical source fed them, guitar speakers impart their own tone. Your amp/cabinet pretty much determines three things about what speaker to select; speaker size, impedance and power rating. (See our tech corner article on Speaker Impedance, Power Handling and Wiring). But the tone is up to you! Speaker replacement is probably the easiest mod you can perform.
Speaker - Celestion, 12", G12M-65 Creamback, 65W
The G12M Creamback is perhaps the definitive vintage Celestion ceramic magnet guitar speaker. Developed in the mid-sixties, it was quickly adopted by players like Hendrix, Clapton, Beck and Page, who typified the louder and more aggressive blues rock playing styles that came to characterize that era.The G12M-65 Creamback produces the familiar woody G12M tone, but handles greater power making it ideally suited for today's amps, when a vintage tone is desired. The increased power handling brings with it low end grunt complementing the warm and vocal mid range, crunchy upper- mids and sweet, refined highs.
Speaker - Celestion, 12", G12-65 Heritage, 65W
With its fast attack and tightly controlled low-end, the G12-65 became a firm favourite in the '80s with hard rock players. The precisely tuned midrange and crisp defined top-end contribute to an aggressive crunch sound that punches through the mix while the mid-range warmth and detail give weight and depth to single notes. Celestion heritage series guitar speaker. Originally created as a higher-power handling variant of the G12M Greenback, the G12-65 is widely regarded as one of the best speakers ever produced for use in a 4x12 cabinet.
Speaker - Jensen® Jets, 12", Tornado Stealth 65, 65W
Few speakers speak ‘classic rock’ like the Neodymium powered Tornado Stealth 65. With a well-controlled top end, a typical British-voiced midrange and fat, warm bass range, the Tornado Stealth 65 is an ideal choice for classic flavored rock tones. Very easy to drive for any amplifier, it allows even the smaller sized open back combo amps to rock with bigger-than-life tones.
