Why is the voltage rating only 55°C on some of your multi section caps and 85°C on others?
Asked by Anonymous on February 1st, 2017.
All caps over 500 volts will have a voltage rating of 85°C and caps below 500 volts will have a rating of 55°C.
I'm asking a follow up question to your temperature rating on can multi section caps. I have an original Mallory multi-section cap and it is rated 20 20 20 25 (uf) with a voltage rating of 400 400 400 and 50 as it is printed right on the can with an 85C temp rating. Matt H indicated in an earlier answer that anything below 500 Volts is only rated to 55C as that is the original Mallory spec. Well, that isn't so by what I read on the outside of the original Mallory can I have. What is correct here? Is there something different in your product that lowers the temp spec to 55C vs the 85C for Mallory, or is this just a de-rating of the same designed Mallory product? I really hate to sub in a 55C can cap for an 85C unit. Mind you, the cap will never see a temp above 55C in actual use, but a higher temp cap may last long over long term use. I'm looking at your CE Manufacturing 20/20/20/20uF 475VDC Multi Section Can Capacitor. The 5uf lower rating on the 4th cap won't matter for my application.
We are unable to verify the original voltage rating on original Mallory caps, but looking at the current stock, I am seeing them rated at 65°C.

What do the tag markings mean?
Asked by Anonymous on March 20th, 2019.
Each of the sections will be assigned a shape that corresponds to the lug for that section of the cap. These are included to more easily keep track of what section is being wired in which way.

Just what I needed for a Heathkit W4-AM
Very close tolerance on this item: all four capacitors were within 1/4 uF of stated value. Good product and excellent choice for vintage guitar amps.
