The JJ Electronic EL844 is a variation on the classic tube which reduces the overall headroom by 25%. With the reduced power, hitting that rich distortion that the EL84 is notorious for is more manageable. This tube will hit full saturated power tube sounds without having to crank the amps volume as high which makes them a great choice for recording as well as home / bedroom use.

Product Reviews

This tube does what it claims to do. I have a 30 watt amp that I can turn up at home. It sounds good like you're playing really loud but you're only kind of loud.

They don't work in a Peavey Classic 30. From other reviews, they may sound good on the overdrive channel, but I only use the clean channel. Raspy, harsh, no sustain. Apparently it is a biasing issue. If you are thinking of taming a Classic 30, try something else.

Put these in a fender pro junior 111. great driven sound comes on a lot earlier.

I tried a matched pair of these jj tesla el-844 lower power version in my Egnater Rebel 30 and bias about 37ma a pair.
The RI mullard el84 pair was in there before is boxed up and put away after hearing the even harmonic nature of the JJ tubes.
A much more natural tube sound and the highs were spot on and no harsh peaks in the highs were there.
If i push the mullard hard they are good, but mostly i dont need that much power right now.
So id say pushed there both great tubes when overdriven and the JJ crunches real nice and a creamy grind on the mullards are just different flavors
Right now im considering a pair for my Rebel 20 head .
Rubys are to crispy brite for my mean 90 pickups and my standard jj tesla el84 tubes didnt seem to be as favorable to my ears as these el-844 tubes are even at low volume practice nice tubes they are.
I will say the mullards are my second choice now .
If i right a review im impressed or very dissapointed .
I luv this new el-844....

This tube is a 'lower rated' tube with a 9 watt output compared to the standard (rated) 12 watt output of any other EL84. However, everyone who can count will notice that 9 +9 = 3 more watts than the 15 which every amp that uses a single pair of EL84 tubes is rated for. 4 of them will produce 36 watts which is 6 more than an AC 30 is rated for, etc.,etc.,As far as this EL-844 goes, ive been paying close attention to the 4 newest JJ's; the 5Y3GT, 6CA7,6550 and this one, and its prety obvious to me that JJ has a thing for old American GE tubes right now....AWSOME!!!! GE was the greatest, and this one seems like a stab at reproducing the GE - 6BQ5. GO for it JJ.More please. How about a GE 12AY7? All the afore mentioned tubes rock and who needs another Chinese "Just Like Telefunken" tube that has about as much resemblance to a Telefunken as does a Christmas tree bulb.

I have a Epiphone Valve Jr V3 half stack with a JP1 mod and wanted to reduce the volume and gain for a basement practice space. After trying a combination of new and stock tubes, I replaced the stock EH 12AX7 and JJ EL84 tubes with the JJ 12AT7 and the new JJ EL844. I like the new brighter and cleaner sound that starts breaking up at about 1:00. My Hardwire OD pedal provides that extra crunch and low end when I want it. Thanks to JJ for another new tube option.
