What do they do?
Electrical power is the product of voltage and current. Power tubes deliver both voltage and current to the load (output transformer and speakers).
How can sound be affected by them?
a.) The amount of idle plate current can be different from tube to tube. A larger idle plate current allows for more clean "headroom" with a tighter feel. A smaller idle plate current allows for easier overdrive distortion and a looser feel.
b.) The amount that certain frequencies are increased can be different from tube to tube. One tube might increase high frequencies more than another, making it sound brighter.
Can they be easily changed?
No. When you decided to change the power tubes in your amp, you should take it to an amp tech who can check and reset the bias for your new power tubes so that they operate properly. We recommend buying matched power tubes for tube longevity, efficiency, and quality of tone.
