Jensen Alnico speakers produce a sweet, warm, vintage tone. They sound best at low levels and are great for blues, jazz, and mellow rock.
Alnico speakers respond quickly, giving the musician a "one with the amp" feel. They are world renowned as the premium speaker with the best tone.
The very first speaker used in a guitar amplifier was a Jensen Alnico - the P15N which were loaded in the first Fender Bassman and Bandmaster amplifiers exclusively. In fact, Jensen Alnico speakers were originally used exclusively by Fender and other amp manufacturers. The P10R was the signature speaker in Fender's legendary Super Reverb.
Alnico speakers are made with magnets containing aluminum, nickel, and cobalt. Cobalt is difficult to procure these days, resulting in the high cost of this speaker line. These speakers all begin with the letter P and are sometimes referred to as the "P Series". Next in the model number is the diameter of the speaker. Following that is a letter which designates the speaker's power rating: R for 25 watts (voice coil (vc) diameter = 1”), Q for 35 or 40 watts (vc diameter = 1.25”), N for 50 watts (vc diameter = 1.5”), and K for 100 watts (vc diameter = 2”). So a P10R is has an alnico magnet, a 10” diameter and is rated at 25 watts with a 1” voice coil.
